Manmasi

Today, your people took to the street demanding justice over tribal land rights.
I saw a man, a students organisation leader,
Pitching a gentle voice against his wife, a state police constable.

Today, your people took to the street because your people live in the land
Where a husband and a wife must come out to the street
After a hug at their doorstep: be safe, my dear.

Today, your tribe stood together with the rest of your neighbouring tribes
And I am more sure of my wish to unite our souls.
Together is beautiful.

Today, your people took to the street and I have to lay rest my song of affection.
Because if I ever marry you one day and our children do not have their street
And free tribal forest to sing their play songs,
To read these poems born out of the wedlock of my romance and affection,
what is the use of my starry-eyed poetry?

Today your people took to the street and my poetry must walk along with them,
but I and my poetry never forget you.
